A Chicken's Life on a Pirate Ship
Have you ever wondered what pirates would eat while on their journeys?
Most well planned journeys included livestock, cheese, fresh vegetables and fruit, but chickens were one of the most coveted of live food for several reasons. They didn't take up much room, they didn't make too much mess and they provided fresh eggs regularly.
While cows and goats did also supply milk for the crew, they were usually slaughtered first since they provided larger amounts of meat that could be preserved... at least according to the standards of the time.
Essentially, pirates ate pretty good at the beginning of the journey. As the voyage extended and food stock began to deplete, all eyes turned to the chickens!
