Pirates of the Mediterranean
For centuries, the Mediterranean Sea was ruled by pirates known as Barbary Corsairs. They have played such a huge part in shaping the European powers but have only been marked as a footnote in history.
One of the most notorious of the Barbary Corsairs was Aruj Barbarossa aka Red Beard; Barbarossa literally translates in Italian to Red Beard.
Red Beard was the second oldest of four brothers, all who became sailors and allies of the Ottoman empire. While on one of their missions, the brothers crossed paths with the Knights of St. John - Christian pirates. During this encounter, Red Beard's youngest brother was killed and Red Beard himself was captured by the knights. He was imprisoned on their island where he served as a galley slave until he was ransomed by an Egyptian prince, and then sent to Alexandria.
This is when Red Beard and his surviving brothers turned to piracy in order to seek revenge and wreak havoc on the Knights and other Christian ships sailing in the Mediterranean. He helped many Jewish and Muslim slaves escape the clutch of the Spanish. He then continued his battle with Spanish by becoming a mercenary and was hired by the ruler of the Algerian seaport of Bougie to retake this city from the Spanish.
His first attempt was unsuccessful and even cost him his arm. Despite losing his arm, Red Beard later returned and managed to drive the Spanish out and killed former ruler of Algiers, Selim ben Tumi, and became ruler of Algiers, himself.
